The V4 engine architecture has been a cornerstone of Honda’s identity for decades, though its mass production for road models was recently paused. However, new technical evidence suggests a resurrection. A potential new VFR 1200—or a similarly positioned flagship—could be equipped with an entirely new V4 unit, as revealed by detailed patents disclosed in late 2025.
New Patents and Technical Specifications

In December 2025, details emerged regarding two distinct patents filed by Honda in May 2024. These documents describe fundamental innovations aimed at making the V4 platform more efficient, compact, and cost-effective.
1. Advanced Lubrication System

The first patent focuses on an oil circulation system designed to drastically reduce internal friction within the oil pumps.

Modular Design: The patent illustrates a method for securing the cylinder head to the crankcase. Interestingly, the drawings use an inline-twin (R2) as a reference—essentially "half" of a V4—suggesting a modular manufacturing approach.

Internal Reservoirs: To eliminate long, heavy external oil lines, Honda has integrated small auxiliary reservoirs directly into the crankcase. These provide a dedicated oil supply to the stator, starter clutch, water pump, and clutch, optimizing space and reducing weight.

2. Revolutionary Cooling System

The second patent addresses the traditional Achilles' heel of V4 engines: rear-cylinder heat.

Intra-V Routing: Coolant channels are positioned within the "V" space between the cylinder banks.

Thermal Priority: The system logic specifically prioritizes the rear cylinder bank, ensuring consistent operating temperatures even during sustained high-load riding or in heavy traffic.

Engine Configuration: 90° and the Balancer Shaft

The previous VFR 1200 used a 76-degree cylinder angle with offset crankpins to achieve a "Big-Bang" firing order, which eliminated the need for a balancer shaft but resulted in a heavy, complex engine.

The new 2025 patents indicate a shift in philosophy:

90-Degree Layout: Technical illustrations suggest a cylinder angle closer to 90 degrees, reminiscent of the legendary RC30 and RC45.

Balancer Shaft: Unlike the 1200cc predecessor, the new design clearly identifies a balancer shaft (Ref. 26) and aligned pistons.

"Screamer" Character: This configuration points toward a more regular, high-revving "Screamer" firing order. This would offer a smoother power delivery and a distinct acoustic signature, differing from the irregular pulses of Ducati’s or Aprilia’s current V4s.

Final Drive: The End of the Shaft?

The most significant departure from the VFR 1200 tradition is the transmission. The patent explicitly describes a chain final drive.

Implication: By abandoning the heavy cardan (shaft) drive, Honda signals that this new V4 is being developed with a sportier, lighter, and more performance-oriented mission in mind, rather than pure heavy-duty touring.
