Technical Considerations, Critical Vulnerabilities, and Maintenance
The Grom is a mechanically mature and well-tested machine, but its particular geometric-structural configuration raises some technical vulnerabilities that a senior tester must highlight.
The first critical factor is tied to the forced/natural air cooling under conditions of intense use. Being a horizontal engine enclosed in compact bodywork and equipped with an aerodynamic belly pan closed in the lower area, the thermal exchange of the cylinder depends exclusively on frontal airflow. In congested summer urban contexts or during prolonged use at full load (e.g., climbs with a passenger), engine oil temperatures can experience significant peaks. It becomes essential to anticipate oil changes (recommended choice: 10W-30 or 10W-40 lubricants with high JASO MA2 specifications) well before the standard mileage intervals, given that the oil pan contains less than a liter of lubricant at complete oil change.
The second vulnerability concerns the dynamics of the chassis on uneven road surfaces. The 12" diameter of the rims generates a minimized gyroscopic effect. While this parameter translates into lightning-fast agility during direction changes at low speeds, it conversely drastically reduces directional stability above 80 km/h. The absorption capacity of the suspension (which lacks progressive linkages) over sharp harshness, such as manhole covers, cobblestones, or deep potholes, is limited: the energy of the impact discharges directly onto the backbone frame and, consequently, onto the rider's back, also triggering sudden reactions on the steering.
Finally, mechanical accessibility is excellent for routine maintenance (spark plug and screw-and-locknut valve clearance adjustments are easily accessible given the exposure of the cylinder), but the layout of the final drive requires attention: the short-pitch chain, due to the continuous load variations caused by the travel of the short swingarm, tends to stretch frequently if not lubricated and tensioned every 1,000 km.
